Women-run places

5 places run by women

Hospitality is, of course, not a matter of gender. And yet, it's striking how many exceptional accommodations are run and shaped by women – through their way of communicating and creating atmosphere. Our five hostesses – some sisters, colleagues, or friends – demonstrate how their approach to hospitality transforms places into true havens of well-being while simultaneously promoting social sustainability.

Find peace and quiet at Annemiek's place in Gelderland

The B&B De Brenschutte In 2021, Annemiek Driesprong, together with young helpers from the area, transformed an old woodworking building into two lovingly furnished accommodations. Annemiek's B&B is aimed at people seeking peace and quiet and wanting to consciously take time for themselves. She is always nearby and available to help with any questions or requests – without disturbing her guests' tranquility. She also prepares a delicious breakfast and equally delicious cakes. The house is nestled in the peaceful Dutch countryside, surrounded by meadows and trees. With a bit of luck, guests might even encounter hares or deer, perfectly complementing the nature experience.

Clémence always knows what to do at La Roucoulade in Provence.

Since 2021, Clémence Roux has been welcoming guests at La Roucoulade They lovingly welcome their guests. The building, dating back to 1875, was previously extensively restored. It's located at the foot of the typical Provençal village of Ventabren, very close to Aix-en-Provence. The tasteful interior is eclectic – a successful mix of bold wall colors, vintage furniture, colorful floor tiles, and modern decor.

You can book an apartment for up to five people year-round, or rent the entire house for up to fifteen people during peak season. Clémence's concierge service ensures an even more pleasant stay. Whatever you need, she can help. Whether it's a babysitter, a swimming instructor, or a florist – she's there to assist.

The beautiful garden, complete with a frog pond, hammocks, a pool, and a view of the historic mill, invites you to linger. The pergola-covered terrace offers a large table for shared evenings under the grapevines. Those who appreciate French cuisine will find plenty to enjoy nearby; a very good Michelin-starred restaurant is just five minutes away. There's hardly a more relaxed way to experience the French way of life.

Sinn & Gewinn Hotels have just celebrated their 25th anniversary and are a Swiss success story. What began in 2001 with the highly acclaimed women's hotel "LADY's FIRST" has developed over a quarter of a century into a financially successful hotel group.

"Our anniversary impressively demonstrates that it is possible to successfully manage companies that are founded specifically for a sustainable purpose."

Feel cared for by sisters Elisabeth and Katharina at the Taxhof

At the beginning of the new millennium, the sisters Elisabeth and Katharina Unterberger took over the Tax yard from their parents – and already in its eleventh generation. Over the past decades, the family has carefully developed the former mountain farm with its small snack bar into a hostel with award-winning architecture.

Despite all the changes, the original, family-run atmosphere of the place has been preserved. The various accommodations are designed with plenty of wood and natural materials and furnished with a harmonious mix of old and new furniture. Alongside farming, the whole family takes great care of their guests with great heart and attention to detail.

At breakfast and the weekly dinner, the food served consists mainly of products from the farm's own fields or from neighboring farms. These delicacies are served in the rustic farmhouse parlor or on the terrace with its breathtaking views. A holiday at the Taxhof is like stepping back in time while simultaneously being modern, close to nature, and full of enjoyment.

Enjoy culinary delights with sisters Cristina and Silvia in Italy

Hosts and sisters Cristina and Silvia Crotti love to share their passion for nature, tradition, and good food with their guests. Il Borgo del Balsamico It lies in a verdant paradise: trees as far as the eye can see, plus the historic villa, the charming country house, and an adjacent small forest. The house's history dates back to the 18th century. It has been family-owned since 1970 and is lovingly maintained.

The eleven rooms are individually designed – each tells its own story and has its own name: these range from the sisters' childhood memories to their father's passion for fashion (he ran a fashion company). Everything is stylish and a successful mix of vintage style and modern elements. A particular highlight is the hotel's own acetaia: here, traditional balsamic vinegar is produced – a true delicacy that guests can experience through tours and tastings.

Conclusion: Women's power ensures social sustainability

Around International Women's Day, monetary and structural inequalities and political demands often come into focus – and rightly so. Equally important are the concrete examples of women who are already leading successful businesses and shaping new forms of cooperation and hospitality. What unites them is a clear stance: attention to people and their needs. Perhaps this is precisely where a message lies that will resonate beyond International Women's Day – more Awareness in everyday life and in how we interact with each other. This creates places where people of all genders can feel welcome.
