Innovative organic cosmetics with Nordic ingredients

Over millennia, the harsh Nordic climate has given rise to plants that have developed extraordinary resilience. Deep roots, bitter leaves, and protective barks helped them survive extreme conditions – and were valued early on for their healing properties. This plant power still forms the basis of the philosophy of MADARA.

What was once a matter of oral tradition is now scientifically tested: For over 15 years, the brand has been researching the effects of Nordic ingredients on the skin, incorporating the expertise of biologists, dermatologists, and modern laboratory analyses. Revitalizing birch water, antioxidant-rich herbs, and select mushrooms provide highly concentrated, natural active ingredients that specifically contribute to improving the skin's condition. In this way, MÁDARA combines traditional botanical knowledge with modern natural cosmetics research – developing skincare and makeup that truly meet the skin's needs.
"As a child, I spent my summers exploring Latvian nature, collecting wild herbs, and listening to my grandmother's stories about their healing properties.. "
Lotte Tisenkopfa-Iltnere founded MÁDARA in 2006, based in Riga, Latvia.
Lotte's way of changing the limits of sustainability
For MÁDARA, sustainability was one of the core values from day one, many years before it became a global trend. Since it was founded in 2006, the Latvian company has tried to be as sustainable as possible. The best proof? While many of the well-known cosmetics manufacturers are still many years away from achieving the goal of using 100 percent recyclable plastics for the manufacture of their primary packaging, MÁDARA had already achieved it when their first products hit the market.
Sustainable & beautiful - inside and out
Sustainability is not just limited to the packaging. Many cosmetic manufacturers still use questionable ingredients that can be harmful to the environment. Given the Latvian company's commitment to sustainability, it's no surprise that MÁDARA cosmetics are natural. This means that they are biodegradable and do not pose a threat to our planet's water, air or soil resources.

MÁDARA's products, ingredients, and formulas are cruelty-free and certified natural or organic. This is done in accordance with the demanding natural beauty standards known as ECOCERT/COSMOS. These standards outline and verify not only the origin of the ingredients but also the packaging and manufacturing processes. The Nordic brand is equally committed to developing its formulations and continuously improving its packaging practices.
Plant stem cells – a groundbreaking technology
Today, the natural cosmetics industry is thankfully gaining more and more attention. But few know that there is another way to make plant-based formulas even more sustainable. Technology and research in the field of plant stem cells proves that this method is invaluable for the future of sustainable formulations.
"Given that one in five plants on our planet is threatened with extinction, our plant stem cell technology makes it possible to obtain active ingredients without harvesting plants or damaging their natural habitats."
The entire process begins under supervision. A small sample of the plant is taken, then treated with antimicrobial agents and cut into tiny portions. In a nutrient-rich environment, these portions then produce plant stem cells.
The extraction of plant stem cells is clean, sustainable and environmentally friendly.
The technology for extracting plant stem cells is extremely clean and sustainable. It is not only environmentally friendly but also delivers impressive results in skincare. MÁDARA continues to explore these benefits and uses plant stem cells in some of its formulations. The active ingredients obtained in this way are biodegradable and free of pesticides and other contaminants. Furthermore, it conserves the natural resources of water and land that would be required for traditional plant cultivation.
Different paths lead to the same destination.
In its search for new sustainable solutions, MÁDARA has introduced one of its products in fully recyclable packaging made from plant-based plastic for the first time. Plant-based plastic consumes up to 40 percent less CO2 over its life cycle. In 2019 alone, MÁDARA used 349 kilograms of plant-based plastic instead of petroleum-based plastics. The company regularly publishes all information about its sustainability efforts in its annual ESG reports.
Collaboration with PACK-TECH, which manufactures packaging from marine waste
The brand aims to use as much recycled plastic packaging as possible. For this reason, MÁDARA works closely with PACK-TECH – a Danish company participating in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) program. PACK-TECH's marine litter plastic packaging has been approved and validated under Goal 12 of the program and has a direct positive impact on the environment. Recycling plastics recovered from the oceans is crucial, as between 150.000 and 500.000 tons of plastic waste end up in the oceans in the EU alone every year. MÁDARA uses marine litter plastics equivalent to the volume of 15.000 500-milliliter PET bottles.
MÁDARA focuses on recycled post-consumer plastics.
MÁDARA also relies heavily on PCR (post-consumer recycled) plastics. The brand has used 6.200 kilograms of PCR plastics to create packaging for its products.
By using recycled PCR plastics and packaging made from marine debris, less new plastic is automatically produced. This is of utmost importance, as global plastic production is now twenty times higher than it was in the 1960s. By choosing MÁDARA products, you too can contribute to achieving the goal of producing less conventional plastic and make recycling more important in your everyday life.
Shaping the future of our planet and the beauty industry
We, as human beings, are an integral part of planet Earth. In a world full of complex interrelationships, caring for the health and beauty of people is synonymous with caring for the well-being and beauty of our planet. What is safe and beneficial for us is also good for our planet. Sustainability is not a goal to be achieved now and forgotten later. Rather, it is a mindset needed on a journey through the only constant in life – change.
