In the rhythm of nature: Holidays in the Alentejo
A visit by Christine Neder of Lilies Diary at the Carveiral Farmhouse: When we arrived at Craveiraal Farmhouse When you arrive, it's immediately clear: everything is different here. No big "Welcome!", nothing unusual. And that's precisely what makes it so special. It's as if you're quietly entering a place that lives in harmony with nature—not against it. Nestled between blooming spring meadows and gently rustling pine trees, the farmhouses are nestled in the Alentejo landscape, as if it had always been there.
We receive a friendly welcome at reception, then we walk across the wooden walkways to our cottage – a short stroll that immediately feels like a vacation. These wooden paths crisscross the entire property and connect the accommodations with the restaurant, spa, and farm area – functional, beautiful, and above all, built with nature in mind. The ground beneath the walkways remains unsealed. Insects, lizards, and birds retain their habitat. A small detail that reveals a lot about the Craveiral concept.
Who is behind Craveiral – and what does the name mean?
The name carnation translates as "carnation field." Countless carnations once grew here, dominating the landscape. Today, they are seen only sporadically, as climate change has left its mark here as well. Yet the name remains as a reminder of nature's heyday and of what Craveiral is to this day: a place full of life, originality, and respect for what was.
Behind this special place is Pedro, a lawyer with a dream. Even as a child, he wanted to be a farmer, but the traditional path initially led him down a different path. At some point, he was satisfied with just dreaming – and he realized his vision of a simple, honest life in the countryside. Thus, the Craveiral Farmhouse was born: not a hotel in the traditional sense, but a consciously designed retreat for people who value nature, tranquility, and sustainability.
During my farm tour, it quickly becomes clear: nothing is left to chance in the concept. There are small details to discover everywhere – birdhouses, insect hotels, a private garden where herbs, fruits, and vegetables grow. Even the smoke from the sauna will be used to smoke food in the future. It's this blend of down-to-earthness, creativity, and a deep environmental awareness that makes Craveiral so special.
Breakfast with fresh raspberries and pancakes under the open sky
Our day begins with a breakfast that not only fills us up, but also makes us happy. The buffet is generous and lovingly prepared – with fresh raspberries, homemade granola, Portuguese pastries, and much more. Next to the restaurant, there's an open-air cooking station where fried eggs or omelets can be freshly prepared upon request. The aroma of coffee fills the air, and those who wish can enjoy breakfast outside in the sunshine, near the pool, with a view of the greenery. Inside, a cozy fireplace in the center of the room provides warmth and atmosphere in winter, and the decor reflects the attention to detail: natural materials, soft colors, and an impressive macramé wall make the space truly special.
Craveiral also offers a wide range of culinary delights for lunch and dinner: The restaurant offers a seasonal à la carte menu with creative dishes that combine the best of the Alentejo. Around 70% of the ingredients come directly from the restaurant's own farm, while the rest comes from regional producers in the Odemira area. Depending on the season, dishes include fresh fish from the market, lamb with herbs from the garden, roasted vegetables, creamy goat cheese, or aromatic wild herb salad. Local wines, homemade bread, and homemade desserts – some traditional Portuguese, some with a modern twist – are also served.
The restaurant isn't just a place to eat, but a place to enjoy, relax, and linger. Those who like can simply sit back after dinner, watch the children play, sip an espresso—and feel everyday life slowly fade into the background.
Relaxation in nature – and in pregnancy massage
Inner peace is also taken care of: I treat myself to a soothing pregnancy massage – performed in a very special retreat: a black wooden house on the edge of the forest. The room is simple, calming, and opens up to the greenery through large windows – the view alone calms your heart rate. The yoga classes also take place there. After the massage, I return home feeling as if I were walking on clouds – with a feeling of lightness and complete peace of mind. Those who want to immerse themselves even more deeply can go to the small sauna with a view of the greenery. In front of it are two freestanding bathtubs – perfect for an ice-cold soak after the sauna session.
And even beyond that, Craveiral offers many opportunities to relax. A hammock here, a lounger by the pool there, or simply your own patio chair – accompanied by birdsong and the scent of the surrounding fields.
Every now and then, a stroll through the extensive grounds is worthwhile – past goats, horses, donkeys, and chickens. If you're up for it, grab one of the bicycles waiting right in front of the house and explore the area on two wheels. And when it's warm, the large natural pool beckons you to cool off – or on cooler days, the indoor pool, which is currently being modernized. The sea isn't far away either – if you'd like, you can spontaneously head down to the water in the afternoon and end the day on the beach.
Beach days, river moments & little adventures
On one of the most beautiful afternoons, we drove to Praia do Carvalhal. The wide sandy beach with its long wooden walkways was ideal for us – there was enough space so no one was stepping on each other's toes, and the kids could run around freely. A particularly nice touch was the small beach bar, run directly by the Craveiral team. We sat in the shade, browsed the familiar menu, and ordered something delicious with a view of the sea – simply perfect for a little break by the water.
Another favorite place was MilfontesThis pretty little town isn't just ideal for strolling through its alleys – we spent a peaceful afternoon there by the Mira River. The water was so clear and gentle that even our little one could splash around on the banks in complete comfort. It's truly a treat for families: just sun, sand, and happy children's laughter.
For children, dogs – and people who want to feel what matters again
Craveiral is a place for everyone. Children can play freely, bake pizza, ride horses—or cycle across the wooden walkway. Dogs are welcome and are allowed to roam freely around the grounds. And adults? They can relax. Take a breather. And maybe take something with them—not just in the form of photos, but also in the form of feelings.
At the end of our trip, I fell into bed every night feeling wonderfully tired. It wasn't the kind of vacation where you tick off as many things as possible—rather, it was one where you felt a lot. Peace. Gratitude. And a little bit of reconnection with nature.
By the way, we were also in this beautiful house, the Black house! Really highly recommended!
