2025 in view: Exciting cultural and travel highlights

Do you feel the same? At the beginning of the year, I am full of enthusiasm for making travel plans in order to fill the still empty, white calendar with colorful plans. Here is a mix of ideas for the coming year. Explore new nature trails, visit cultural highlights and travel to sustainable destinations. Here are our travel highlights:

Chemnitz: Upcycling in the Capital of Culture

For me, a good starting point for research is always the current (and former) European Capitals of Culture, because they had to apply for the title with exciting concepts and often offer unusual events. This year it will be the cities Chemnitz, Nova Gorica in Slovenia and Gorizia directly opposite in Italy.

In Chemnitz the program starts on 18.01.2025 under the motto “C the Unseen” and the topic of sustainability will always be in focus. From 28.3. until 30.4.2025/XNUMX/XNUMX For example, shop windows and empty rooms in the city centre of the suburb of Lößnitz are transformed into art spaces. Under the title ADDED VALUE:CREATION Artists present their works that they have created from seemingly useless materials and garbage. Lots of other exciting and engaging projects, which often involve the city's residents, are on the program all year round. If you need a break, you should visit the newly leased Dreamers Café with delicious seasonal and vegetarian snacks.

London: Music fans and foodies make a pilgrimage to Cool Britannia in autumn

London is of course always exciting and the abundance of cultural highlights and new things is huge. What is particularly nice is the fact that you no longer have to fly there, but can go there by train. Perhaps an idea for the autumn? Because on 13.09.2025 A special David Bowie exhibition with over 90.000 exhibits opens in London. The estate is presented by the new Victoria & Albert Museum East Storehouse on the site of the 2012 Olympic Games. Fans, students and researchers gain insights into the creative process of the famous British singer, songwriter and actor. Iconic!

In the Camden district, the Buck Street Market It will be exciting. You can eat and shop in colorful stalls made from reusable freight containers. Responsible retailers sell environmentally friendly products with a focus on conscious consumption and zero waste. The Metropolitan Market with four locations – single-use plastic is prohibited at all of these food spots.

This combination promises to be a great travel highlight!

Wales: National parks serve environmental protection

A trip to London could easily be combined with a trip to Wales Together, the three Welsh National parks – Eryri (Snowdonia), Pembrokeshire Coast and Bannau Brycheiniog – twenty percent of the Welsh landscape. The unique natural landscapes, traditional villages and World Heritage sites offer a charming holiday backdrop. The region can also be easily travelled by train or local buses.

Vilnius: The Greenest City in Europe

Pretty high on my bucket list has been Vilnius, even more so after reading that it will be the European Green Capital in 2025. In the Lithuanian capital, hundreds of kilometers of cycle and pedestrian paths and the emission-free public transport system are being developed and have already been developed. Over 60 percent of the city is covered with trees. These huge parks offer residents easy access to nature. They are central to urban planning and offer many sustainable outdoor activities.

Vilnius also has access to clean and high-quality drinking water, which is extracted from deep within the earth. Drinking tap water is recommended not only at home but also in restaurants. This reduces the need for bottled water and minimizes plastic waste. Speaking of restaurants, they are said to be particularly good here. And not far from Vilnius is the beautiful Good Travel accommodation VasaRojusNot only a travel highlight – also an overnight highlight!

Berlin: Free Lunch Concert at the Philharmonie

A tip that is not only valid for this year but is still worth its weight in gold are the free lunch concerts in the Berlin Philharmonic Hall. Every Wednesday (September to June) between 13 and 14 p.m., young musicians play in the foyer of this special building by the famous architect Hans Scharoun. For 40 to 50 minutes, there is chamber music, piano concerts, or sometimes a drum duo. From Tchaikovsky to tango, everything is there.

After the concert, it is worth taking a detour to the State Library opposite, designed by the same architect, where you can also visit the extremely exciting building for free, which has also been used as a motif for films on several occasions (Wings of Desire, The Coming Days).

Norway: A floating restaurant with impact

A silver structure has been floating in the middle of the Hardanger Fjord in Norway since 2023, housing a sustainable restaurant called Iris The so-called Salmon Eye appears to float like a pebble on the surface of the lake and can only be reached by electric boat. The fine dining menu consists of sustainable products from the region. The short transport routes for the food ensure that the guests come to eat here and not the other way around. The head chef Anika Madsen and the owner Eide Fjordbruk are committed to responsible treatment of the oceans and the creatures in the sea. The entrepreneur runs a sustainable and climate-neutral aquaponics fish farm in the region. In addition to the restaurant, there is a multi-sensory visitor center and a museum that draws attention to the overfished waters and shows solutions.

Rotterdam: The first museum on the subject of migration

mid-May 2025 will be held in Rotterdam Fenix Museum It is the world's first museum that will deal with the history of migrants. Housed in a former warehouse from 1922 at the famous Rotterdam port. On the so-called Sustainable Cities Index Rotterdam is in second place after Amsterdam. Unfortunately, Amsterdam is often is overcrowded and this year the 750th anniversary is being celebrated in a big way in October, we recommend the relaxed number two. By the way, you can take the train to Rotterdam's city beach Hoek van Holland and enjoy relaxing hours by the sea. There is now also a nice Good Travel accommodation here - the Cocoondo.
