Five places for vegetarians
Vegetarianism has a long history, dating back to ancient times. One of the earliest and most famous advocates of this diet was the Greek scholar Pythagoras (yes, the one from math class). He is credited with the quote, "Whatever man does to animals comes back to man."
Nowadays, more and more people are choosing a vegetarian diet, whether for ethical reasons, animal welfare, or ecological considerations. Since climate protection can not only be sensible, but also enjoyable, we have put together five special accommodations where vegetarian, seasonal and, above all, delicious food is served.
1. Visiting friends
Reguengo invites you to spend a wonderful time on the west coast of Portugal, soaking up the sun, nature and positive energy. As soon as you arrive, you have the feeling that you have arrived among friends. This is also the motto "Reguengo - like among friends", because 25 years ago the family resort was founded by four friends. They can still be found on site today.
Reguengo is both a country inn and a family resort - 14 rooms and apartments are available for rent, the large apartments are equipped with pantry kitchens. Depending on the accommodation, the atmosphere is either cozy or spacious. All accommodations are flooded with light and have their own terrace.
The coast is 20 minutes away and offers many excursion options. Those who prefer to stay at the resort can enjoy the private bathing lake (natural pool) with crystal clear water and treat themselves to a massage.
The majority of the fresh food is sourced from local markets, but also from small farms in the area. Reguengo has built up a functioning network of regional organic suppliers, from whom it also purchases. The kitchen offers exclusively vegetarian dishes.
2. A slow food farm
From the Hotel Drumlerhof Guests can enjoy the view of the mighty Taufers Castle, to the north the southern side of the Zillertal Alps with the main Alpine ridge, to the south the rock massifs of the Rieserferner group, as well as the roofs of the small Italian village of Sand in Taufers.
The main house is a historic guesthouse and was built as a farm in 1576. Since 1993, the Innerhofer-Fauster family has been running the Dumlerhof with great dedication. The romantic farm is a beautiful mix of tradition and modernity, using minimalist furniture and local materials. In the hotel, guests can experience how easy it is to live sustainability. Since 2023, the daughters have been bringing new momentum and fresh ideas to the house. The new look from the outside - without any structural changes - is particularly noticeable.
In the kitchen, however, the slow food concept is still followed, which also involves short routes - from growing the food to serving it. The hotel also specializes in gluten-free cuisine, as the host Ruth herself has an intolerance but still does not want to miss out on delicious dishes. There is almost nothing that Ruth and the team do not prepare themselves: from breakfast rolls to homemade pasta and homemade sweets. In summer, most of the fruit and vegetables come from the farm. Particular attention is paid to seasonality, which is why, for example, there are no fresh tomatoes in winter, but delicious winter salads as well as beets and cabbage. Sustainability can be so delicious.
3. Enjoyment runs in the family
Experience peace and nature in the middle of Lower Saxony: The Okelmann's is surrounded by a large garden, fields, forest and meadows. The direct location on the Warper Sculpture Trail enables an active nature holiday and thanks to the tiny sauna in the shepherd's wagon, active relaxation is also guaranteed.
The two sisters Maren and Kristin Okelmann are hosts with heart and soul. The family business is run by the fifth generation and the restaurant has been in existence since 1879. The current hotel was opened in 2012 and was lovingly furnished by the owners: The style is modern and combines the Scandinavian interior design style with country house elements. The materials are tastefully coordinated and all the furniture was made by a regional carpenter's workshop. Each room has its own special feature: either an alcove, a partition made of logs or works of art by the local painter Pablo Hirndorf incorporated into the headboard.
This is how a place of peace has been created where relaxation, enjoyment and sustainability are the top priority. The hosts' heartfelt desire is to give people a good time and many moments of happiness. Regional delicacies are served in the Café Heimatliebe and in the restaurant. Among the guests, the Warper wedding soup and the Bavarian cream from senior chef Annegret are at the top of the list for the most popular dishes. Vegan and vegetarian dishes are served every day and intolerances are taken into account.
4. The pioneers on the Elbe
Opened in 2021 ahead castle hotel is one of the few purely vegan hotels in Germany and aims to be one of the most sustainable hotels in Germany. The committed team implements the ambitious goals with a lot of passion and enthusiasm. In the middle of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Elbe River Landscape lies the listed castle from the 13th century, surrounded by a large garden and a small river. A variety of offers for exercise in nature bring the desired grounding and relaxation. The traditions of the place paired with the sustainable ideas result in a coherent concept.
The rooms are located in the castle or in the historic castle school. The furnishings are made using organically certified furniture and materials. Wooden furniture, light textiles, natural colors and meadow green decorative details dominate. Yoga mats are also available in each room for the daily classes in the tea house or garden.
The restaurant "place to V" serves vegan food. Depending on the season, there are black gnocchi with truffles, wild herb salad with colorful tomatoes, or crumble with fruit from the restaurant's own orchards. After eating, you can take a walk and see some of the plant products you just consumed growing.
5. The handmade fairytale forest
The Montanema Handmade Village is located in a fairytale forest with beautiful, lush green trees, enchanted glades, waterfalls and gorges. It is a holiday village with an excellent restaurant, a cozy café, a large spa area, an outdoor pool, a zoo and vegetable gardens.
Christos and Dimitris have been hosting the village since 2014, after Christos fell in love with this magical place during one of his hikes. He wanted to share the peace and contentment he felt here in the middle of the forest with other people. They built the village piece by piece to create a truly natural holiday destination. The 34 stone houses and villas in traditional style offer stunning views of the Pindos Mountains and are located not far from the mythical rocks of Meteora with monasteries that seem to touch the sky.
In addition to the large spa and wellness area, the many excursions and courses on offer such as yoga or archery, the focus here is above all on good food and regional ingredients. Products from the farm itself are used, with its many animals, a vegetable and herb garden and bees. The food is cooked in old wood-fired ovens according to traditional recipes. There are also regular BBQ parties on the wooden terrace in the middle of the forest and everything smells of fire, wild nature and good food - simply magical.
