Traveling by night train is a way of traveling that is not only incredibly exciting, but extremely much compared to flying or driving a car CO₂ saves. But where do you actually go with the night train? We took a look and picked out five really cool connections from Germany, Austria and Switzerland for you. There should be something for everyone.

1. Berlin-Budapest: From B to B

Anyone who has never been to Budapest should visit the Hungarian capital as soon as possible. Because wonderful architecture, great vintage shops, good (and above all cheap) food, thermal baths and a great nightlife are waiting for you there. For everyone who is now hooked: From Berlin you can take the night train directly to the Hungarian metropolis. From Charlottenburg train station, the journey takes you via Frankfurt through south-western Poland via southern Moravia to Budapest. In just under 13 hours, the EuroNight EN 40457 (from Břeclav EN 477) takes you in a seated car from 30 euros and in a couchette car from 49 euros directly to the hometown of Robert Capa and Zsa-Zsa Gabor.

2. Zurich-Amsterdam: from the mountains to the lowlands

Anyone who has ever been to Amsterdam knows that it's hip here. It teems with many small cafes that settle along the canals, bicycles and second hand shops. From the modern Swiss metropolis (which incidentally only has the cheese in common with Amsterdam), the Nightjet 402 takes you to Amsterdam in just under eleven and a half hours via Basel, Freiburg, Offenburg, Bonn, Cologne, Duisburg, Arnhem and Utrecht. 3. Hamburg-Stockholm: When "Moin" becomes "Hej".

From the Hanseatic city there is a direct route to beautiful Stockholm. The SJ EuroNight takes its passengers to their destination in around 13 hours. And the route alone offers a few highlights, such as the Öresund Bridge, which is almost eight kilometers long and which you cross by train. And if the ride is so spectacular, the end goal can only be better. What's waiting for you in Stockholm? Great buildings, exciting museums, hip concept stores and lots of Kanelbullar, i.e. cinnamon rolls. In a sleeping car with two and three-seater compartments, you can travel to the Swedish capital from as little as 49 euros.

4. Augsburg-Düsseldorf: Trial course in night train travel

For all those who want to get a taste of night train travel and prefer to travel within the national borders, it is advisable to only travel a section of the route (in order to be able to determine whether traveling by train at night is something for you). How about, for example, the route from Augsburg in Bavaria to Düsseldorf in North Rhine-Westphalia? Here you are on the road for a good eight hours, get a feeling for the world of night trains and, on top of that, you can see something within Germany (that is not to be scoffed at, please). With the Nightjet 420 (or in the opposite direction with the Nightjet 421) you can travel 30 kilometers through Germany in a seated car from 60 euros, in a couchette car from 90 euros or in a sleeper car from 590 euros.

5. Vienna-Paris: The connection between two Art Nouveau metropolises

It is not for nothing that people like to say “Paris is always a good idea”. Without exception, Paris is always worth a trip - whether in the golden autumn, when a walk through the Jardin de Tuileries feels like a fairy tale, or in spring, when the small streets of Montmartre shine with fresh splendor. All the better that there is a great night train connection from Vienna to the city of love - from one cosmopolitan city to the next, so to speak. The ÖBB Nightjet 468 (or in the opposite direction the Nightjet 469) rolls from the Austrian metropolis to the French capital in about 14 hours. You can get the special ride in a seated car from 30 euros, in a couchette car from 60 euros and in a sleeping car from 90 euros. Incidentally, the trains always leave Vienna on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

accommodation tip: If you are already in Paris, you can also make a detour to Marseille and there in the fabulous Edelweiss check in. The typical old Marseille town house extends over three floors as a bed and breakfast and offers its guests a full load of vintage, art deco and luxury junk.
