How overtourism destinations are reinventing themselves during the crisis

Amsterdam prohibits private rental of holiday apartments in the city center and Venice bans cruise ships out of the lagoon by the end of the year: These are just two developments that you could read in the news landscape in recent months. More and more destinations that with overtourism are faced, or were, face the problem and want to promote fair tourism in their region.

The importance of government measures and civil society initiatives

In addition to state regulators such as laws, initiatives from civil society also play a central role. This is shown by the example from Venice: The ban on cruise ships is due to the longstanding work of the citizens' committee “No grandi navi” (in German: “No big ships”). The corona crisis also played a decisive role: The pandemic caused a rethink among many Venetians who saw the crisis as an opportunity. An opportunity to reposition tourism and make it more sustainable.

Promote sustainable cooperation between travelers and those who have traveled

This is how the organization increases "Venice Authentica“With their platform, for example, the acceptance between tourists and locals. Travelers can book activities on the platform and either learn how to make Murano jewelry themselves or how to decorate typical Venetian masks. There is also an interactive map showing shops that are run by Venetians and offer high quality products. Both sides like that: travelers get to know the “real Venice”, the locals in turn benefit financially, as the profits do not go to large corporations.

Organizations that promote sustainable cooperation can also be found in other destinations. The "International Greeters Association“Offers free city tours worldwide. The special thing: The Guides are locals who take travelers with them into their everyday lives and show them their favorite corners of the city. This often leads travelers off the beaten tourist track.

Spend your vacation away from the crowds and help curb plastic consumption

In addition to social sustainability, other organizations focus on eliminating the negative impact tourism has on the environment. The non-profit organization "Cleanwave“, for example, is committed to reducing plastic consumption in Mallorca and other parts of Spain. On the Balearic Islands alone, 1,5 million plastic bottles are used every day, which in turn pose a real threat to the surrounding natural resources, especially the oceans. Thanks to the initiative, there are now over 70 drinking water stations on Mallorca that are filled with water filtered by osmosis. At the stations, you can fill up your own stainless steel bottles or those produced by “Cleanwave” for free, thus putting an end to the flood of plastic. The organization recently launched an app that shows all the filling stations nearby.

Reinventing overtourism destinations towards sustainable tourism

Instead of simply returning to the old ways, many overtourism destinations are currently using the time to reinvent themselves. The examples presented show that civil society plays just as important a role in this as politics and business. And while the destinations are finding each other, now is also the ideal time to visit the local sights. Many places that are usually avoided due to the large crowds of tourists are not as crowded as usual. No matter whether it is the Berlin TV tower, Neuschwanstein Castle or the Frauenkirche in Dresden: get to know your own city and region from a traveler's perspective! And who knows, maybe you will fall in love all over again and in the future also think more about the treasures on your own doorstep. Because the travel decisions of each individual are also not entirely unimportant for the new direction of the overtourism destinations. By consciously opts for gentle tourism, you can contribute yourself to moving tourism in a sustainable direction.
