The two makers of hejhej

Yoga mats made from recycled materials

Encounters with people who are inspiring are something very special. The last time we met was at the Berlin Travel Festival, where we met Anna and Sophie from hejhej-mats. With hejhej-mats, the two founded a start-up that produces sustainable yoga mats in line with the circular economy. In the circular economy, practically no waste is produced during the entire production process, as the materials are continuously reused and recycled.

The recycled materials give the yoga mats a unique and minimalist look, which makes each individual mat unique. In addition to the sustainability and the high quality of the mats, the founders, who are also enthusiastic yogis, wanted to offer a high level of functionality. The mats from hejhej-mats are therefore particularly non-slip and are characterized by a high level of comfort. This is how it works with a clear conscience to the next yoga class or trip.

We met Anna and Sophie, the founders of hejhej-mats, and asked them our three questions.

1. What was or is your motivation behind hejhej-mats?

The idea for hejhej-mats arose spontaneously in an art exhibition in Sweden. There yogis were denounced because they often think they lead a sustainable lifestyle, but many had not yet thought through to their mat. It was the same for us up to this point. Our research for really sustainable yoga mats has not satisfied us, so we have developed a yoga mat ourselves based on the principle of the circular economy. We are motivated on the one hand by our contribution to make the planet a little more sustainable and on the other hand by the fact that we as young founders can act as role models for young girls.

2. What do you advise our readers: What can we do specifically for a better future?

Move consciously and mindfully through everyday life. Hardly anyone manages to live sustainably through and through. But to be aware of the influence, for example, of our daily purchase decisions on the sustainable development of our planet is important and gradually brings you closer to a sustainable lifestyle. It is also worthwhile for our environment to question where our rubbish actually ends up when we throw something away without thinking too much.

3. How do travel and sustainability fit together for you?

For us, traveling means expanding your own horizons, developing an awareness of foreign cultures, other ways of life and experiencing breathtaking nature up close. That's why we think sustainability and travel go very well together, because when you experience the beauty of nature or the poverty of other countries yourself, you suddenly live more consciously back at home and are more careful with resources. Of course, you also have direct decisions for or against sustainability when traveling. Getting there is particularly important, we try to take the train as often as possible instead of flying and then live as sustainably as possible on site.
