By bus through the Bregenz Forest

Vorarlberg is the second smallest federal state in Austria and is located in the very west. Nevertheless, Vorarlberg doesn’t have to hide, because wonderful panoramic views over the Alps await here. This is also where the Bregenzerwald region is located, which scores points above all with rolling hills, romantic river valleys and imposing peaks.

A treat for the eyes

The Bregenz Forest is not only popular with skiers and hikers. The region has also made a name for itself in recent years with its harmonious architecture and innovative craftsmanship. Nowhere else is tradition so boldly combined with modernity. The result is a wide variety of buildings that are not only stylish and aesthetic, but also well thought-out at the same time.

Many accommodations and guest houses also know how to combine the old with the new. Wood plays an essential role in this. Two particularly inspiring examples can be found on Good travel. The Hotel Bären and the Hotel Post Bezau used the material in their own way.

“Buswartehäusle”: Honor the old and welcome the new

A very special project is the "BUS: STOP Krumbach" project in the 1000-inhabitant community of Krumbach. Probably the most attractive and exciting bus stops in Austria were built here in 2014. They combine everyday mobility with building culture in a particularly beautiful way.

The daring idea arose at the regulars' table in Krumbach, when the renewal of the stops was being discussed. According to the motto of the Bregenzerwald dialect poet Gebhard Wölfe "Meor ehrod das Ault, and greetings to the Nü", seven selected architects from all over the world were invited to the Bregenzerwald to design "bus shelters". Although they could not be offered a large fee, all the architects agreed. They were only paid for the plane ticket and a one-week stay to be able to look around Krumbach.

All actors were involved in the planning right from the start

In cooperation with the Architekturzentrum Wien and the Vorarlberg Architecture Institute, the first drafts for the bus stops were created. As soon as a "bus shelter" was completed, a topping-out ceremony was celebrated with the residents. In general, the local population, innkeepers and local associations were included in the planning from the start, so that there was no skepticism from the residents.

With the “BUS: STOP Krumbach” project, a piece of architectural history was written that can be experienced on site today. Every thirty minutes. At the latest when the yellow country bus stops at one of the stops. And you continue with him to the next "bus stop".
